How do I design a kids' room that grows with them?

Keep the big pieces neutral and put the theme on things that are easy to change — one wall, the rug, bedding and decor.

How do I design a kids' room that grows with them?

Short answer: keep the expensive, permanent pieces — wardrobes, flooring, the bed frame — calm and neutral, and put the theme on things that are easy to change, such as one feature wall, the rug, bedding and decor.

One wall, not four

A mural or wallpaper on a single wall gives a strong theme — dinosaurs, space, a forest — and can be painted over in an afternoon when your child's interests change.

Furniture that adapts

Choose a desk and chair with adjustable heights, open low shelves a small child can reach, and wardrobes with movable rails and shelves so the inside can change from toys to clothes and books.

Safety basics

Anchor tall furniture to the wall, choose rounded corners, use cordless blinds, and keep sockets covered while children are small.

Light for every age

A soft night light for little ones, a good desk lamp for homework later, and a warm main light on a dimmer for bedtime.

Our Dino Kids' Room project uses exactly this approach: the dinosaurs live on the mural, the rug and the toys, while the wardrobes and desk stay simple enough for the teenage years.
